In order that the record of this year, of this class, of this age,

May not be lost in the waves of the great sea of life

And swept upon the shores of Eternity unsung,

We hereby set down on these pages a portion of this year,

This class, and this age, so that we may better recall some of

The enriching moments we shared while seeking to fulfill

Our academic, cultural, and social aims at wonderful Fairmont State College.

THE MOUND 1960

FAIRMONT STATE COLLEGE

FAIRMONT, WEST VIRGINIA

The 7 960 Mound is dedicated to the memory of Dr. John W. Pence, President of Fairmont State College.
All who knew him felt the tremendous loss when learning of his death on Wednesday, November 25,
1959. If the college has earned the reputation of being friendly, it is no more than a reflection of the
man who influenced it for thirty-three years, as teacher, Dean of Men, Dean of the College, Acting Presi-
dent, and since 1952, as President.

A conscientious scholar, he strove for high standards of instruction and scholarship on the campus. As
a broad-visioned administrator, he was diligent in working for the steady growth of the college. But it is
as an unconscious model for one and all that his influence will go furthest through the years.

Dr. Pence was an unassuming man, of deep personal modesty — his concern was for others. His un-
failing courtesy was based on intrinsic kindness. Firm in guidance, patient, and calm, he was able to
draw the best from others.

Dr. Pence was approachable and had time for everyone; teacher, student or campus employee could
be assured that his smile and personal greeting sprang from a sincere liking and interest.

Fairmont State College, which has had the benefit of this leader's lifetime of service, is a different kind
of school because it has been influenced by the guidance of Dr. John W. Pence.

On May 10, 1960 the Alpha Chapter of the Zeta Sigma Fraternity became a
chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon Social Fraternity. Tau Kappa Epsilon was founded
at Illinois Wesleyan University on January 10, 1899, as a new kind of fraternity
in which members would be chosen "not for wealth, rank, or honor but for
personal worth and character."

This chapter is the last remaining chapter of Zeta Sigma Fraternity. Zeta Sigma
was founded as a national fraternity for men at Fairmont State on May 10, 1935.

FSC 12 - SHEPHERD 6

At the opening of the 1959 football season the chance of repeating the fine record of
just two years earlier seemed slight, due to the loss of players through graduation. But through
the fine coaching <5f "Deacon" Duvall and his staff, and the desire of the team to win, the
Falcons were able to remain undefeated and capture the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference Championship.

With Shepherd dominating the ball throughout the first half, it looked as though Fairmont
State College was in for a long season. AAoses Guin's fine blocking and the outstanding running
and passing of Ed Helminski, Kent AAalloy, and Bob Newbrough proved to be a successful
combination. Fairmont State wrapped up the game with a four-yard plunge by halfback Hel-
minski.

FSC 18 - DAVIS & ELKINS
Davis & Elkins proved to be no match for Coach "Deacon" Duvall's chargers and his well-
employed two-platoon system. In spite of being sidelined for the biggest part of the game Kent
Malloy proved his great ability by directing two of the three touchdowns.

FSC 7 -WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN

Sam Ross, coach of the "Bobcats," put it well, "We just couldn't run the ends and also stop
Ed Helminski." Ed appeared to be the main cog with his tremendous running ability. The most
spectacular play of the game occurred after Ed was trapped on a pass play and broke loose
for a first down on Wesleyan's eleven. He then smashed off tackle and into paydirt from the
three.

FSC 26 - CONCORD 6

With Kent AAalloy sidelined with an infected throwing
arm, Joe Bundy, ordinarily a defensive end, turned in a
very creditable performance as he pitched his first touch-
down strike on a 62-yard play to end Curtis Guin.

Ed Helminski gave a fine demonstration of his All-
American talent by gaining 143 yards in 18 carries and
two touchdowns. "Mr. Inside," Moses Guin, added the
final touches of the night on a six-yard touchdown scoring
dash. Another bright spot on the Falcon lineup was veteran
end Mike Currence, who played his first game of the sea-
son after recovering from a swimming accident occurring
last summer.

FSC 19 -WEST VIRGINIA TECH 12
This was a great day for the Homecoming fans as the
undefeated Falcons triumphed in a lasf period upset over
West Virginia Tech's powerhouse. Sound defensive tactics,
employed by Coach Duvall, made the difference in the
game.

The Falcons traded possession for position all afternoon,
and their big break came midway through the final quarter
when Gene Beasley intercepted one of quarterback Dick
Johnson's passes and scampered 35 yards for the winning
touchdown.

99

FSC 1 3 - SALEM 6

FSC's defensive-minded squad parlayed a blocked punt by Fred Colburn into a winning touch-
down to defeat Salem in a battle between the undefeated Eastern and Western Division leaders.

The winning touchdown was actually set up by a 50-yard punt by AAoses Guin, which gave
Salem the ball deep within their own territory. Four plays later, Salem's punt was blocked
and the Falcons recovered on the thirteen. Jim Shaner scored from the one-yard line after the
Falcons made four tries. The place-kick, by Aaron Miller, was good enough to end the scoring.

FSC 7 - GLENVILLE
The Falcons proved the age-old theory that the best defense is a good defense. Four different
times, the "Hercules Hardheads," FSC's stout defensive unit, stopped Glenville's threats within
the Falcon's ten-yard line.

FSC was unable to cross into paydirt until the fourth quarter. The touchdown was set up
with a pass from Kent Malloy to Bob Newbrough on the five-yard line. Malloy again connected
to Curtis Guin later, who then went on to paydirt. The highlight of the game was a sparkling
sixty-four yard run by Moses Guin, which put the Falcons on the eleven-yard line.

FSC 25 -WEST LIBERTY 13

The Falcons presented their best passing attack of the season when Kent Malloy hit on five
of his seven passes. Senior Moses Guin contributed outstandingly with two touchdowns, despite
a severe nose injury.

The Falcons defense had a field day by intercepting four of West Liberty's passes. The inter-
ception which really brought the spectators to their feet was that by Ed Helminski on the forty-
five yard line. Ed ran the remaining fifty-five yards for the touchdown that broke the game wide
open.

VARSITY BASKETBALL

FIRST ROW: Don Williams, Tony Schinto, Jim Salina, Berny Thompson, Bob Chatman, Bill May. SECOND ROW: Willie Jones, Roger Diaz,
Ron Everhart, Curt Guin, Joe Wilson, John Conaway. THIRD ROW: Bill Swatts, Nick Colantino, Joe Tristani, John Steadman, Peter Dickerson,
Fielding Yost, Coach Paul "Pi" Davis.

With the three top scorers from the previous season graduated, the Falcon "Basketballers"
found themselves at the very embryonic stages of a rebuilding program this year. Freshmen
and non-lettermen provided the nucleus of the ball club. Only two veterans were on the squad.
This year's team was perhaps one of the most inexperienced squads the Fairmonters ever
fielded. Despite the record, the team, led by veterans- Ron Everhart and Curt Guin, played a
spirited brand of ball.

FAIRMONT, WEST VIRGINIA

Fairmont is the county seat of Marion County and is in the center of the northern
West Virginia coal, gas, and oil fields. A thriving city of some 30,000 inhabitants, it
is easily accessible to all principal cities in the Eastern United States.

Fairmont offers unusual cultural and economic advantages. It possesses excellent
stores for shopping, and numerous churches of all faiths. A civic-minded community,
it has earned the reputation of being "The Friendly City." The Mound business man-
agers urge you to patronize those firms and businessmen who were kind enough to
support our college through purchasing space in this yearbook.
